Havana: The President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today evoked the revolutionary Camilo Cienfuegos, on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the physical disappearance of the Cuban hero, Prensa Latina publishes.

Through his official Twitter account, the president wrote: ‘Camilo, in the eternal memory of the people’, and accompanied his message with the hashtags #SomosCuba #SomosContinuidad.

Camilo Cienfuegos (1932-1959) was one of the protagonists of the armed feat that overthrew the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista on January 1, 1959.

After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, he held the position of Chief of Staff of the Rebel Army.

On October 28, 1959, he traveled to the province of Camagüey, in the center-east of the country, for work reasons, and when he returned to Havana the plane in which he was travelling disappeared in the middle of a storm.

After days of intense searching, the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro expressed: ‘Men like Camilo Cienfuegos emerged from the people and lived for the people. Our only compensation for the loss of a comrade so close to us is knowing that the people of Cuba produce men like him. Camilo lives and will live in the people. ‘

Every year, Cubans remember the hero with a pilgrimage and throw flowers into the sea and rivers as a tribute to his life and work.

This October 28, in compliance with the health measures against Covid-19, the massive pilgrimage will not be promoted, but the tribute will be made in a reduced way with representatives of labor and student groups, and through social networks and media communication.
