Washington: Democrat Senator Ron Wyden presented a legislation to end the blockade imposed by Washington against Cuba, which today hinders the development of the nation, Prensa Latina publishes.
As his office said in a statement, continuing with this mechanism from the 1960s would be a failure and stressed that the US Congress has an obligation to improve relations between the two countries as quickly as possible.
The Donald Trump administration increased tensions with Cuba during his disastrous time in office, but I am optimistic about President Joe Biden’s new diplomatic course, said Wyden, who is head of the Senate Finance Committee.
Regardless, the North American Congress has a moral and economic obligation to the American people to improve relations between the United States and Cuba as quickly and safely as possible, he insisted in a statement.
As reported by the legal news service Law360, the 12-page bill entitled the United States-Cuba Trade Act of 2021 was introduced on Friday by Wyden, a Democratic senator from Oregon, with the backing of three co-sponsors of his own match.
If approved, adds that specialized site, the bill would eliminate Section 620 (a) of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961; it would repeal the Helms-Burton Act of 1996; and the Cuban Democracy Act, also known as the Torricelli Law, of 1992.
Likewise, it would mean the lifting of sanctions against Cuba and the establishment of normal commercial relations between the two countries, and it also has other provisions that affect trade, investment, remittances and travel to the Caribbean island.
Previously, in 2017, Wyden already presented a bill to lift the United States blockade against Cuba, which encountered numerous obstacles and could not succeed.
Since the beginning of his mandate, in January 2017, Trump began to implement unprecedented measures against Cuba, which stood out for their hostile sistematicity and surpassed the figure of 240.
In late January, White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced that Biden plans to review US policy toward Cuba, and take his own course.
In the four years of his mandate, Trump intensified the hostility and blockade against the island, even in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, which was rejected by the vast majority of the international community and also within the United States.
