The weightlifting family in honor of his short, but outstanding sports career, decided by unanimous vote to name this international tournament after his name, paying tribute to the first coach who managed to have an athlete trained by him win the gold medal in the Olympic Games. The athlete who had that honor was Daniel Núñez Aguiar.
The event competitions began in the 1980s and from then on, they are held annually from March to May, with the participation of national and international athletes. Sometimes it merges with the Cuba Olympic’s, performing two events in one, with double awards to the winners.
