Mayabeque, Cuba: The Cuban Public Health System is internationally renowned for its humanism and its high scientific rigor. Only the political will of the revolutionary state allows the nation to show health indicators compared to highly developed countries, despite the blockade imposed by the United States (US) on Cuba.

We talked with the director of Public Health in Madruga, Dr. Ania Martínez Gómez.

Journalist: Which are the main effects of the imperialist blockade on the health sector?

AMG: Pretending to plague people with diseases is one of the cruelest things, and that is the objective of the imperialist blockade. It affects us because it hinders the arrival of medicines in the country and other necessary resources for patients in the primary and secondary care.

But these restrictions do not stop the development of this sector, although it makes it more expensive, because the State invests millionaire figures every year in benefit of the health of the people.

J: How do medical professionals respond to the aggressive policy of the US against Cuba?

AMG: First of all, we are patriots and revolutionaries with a vocation to serve with all proof. That is why the blockade fails, because before each difficulty our doctors, nurses and technicians put their talent and professionalism first. For example, life expectancy of the Island is over 76 years and the infant mortality rate remains below 5 per thousand live births.

J: To guarantee the health of the Cuban people and, in addition, to help other countries, is the proof that the empire will never be able to block solidarity or the decision of the Cubans to continue defending socialism. Do you share the previous statement?

AMG: Of course and I'm very proud to be an example. I went to Venezuela and like thousands of colleagues I raise the name of the Cuban Revolution and that's the way it will continue happening, because every year the Caribbean nation graduates new medical professionals willing to provide services anywhere in the world. Justice will triumph some day and then everything will be easier.

With blockade or without blockade, the Homeland of Martí and Fidel will continue to be a bulwark of justice and dignity throughout the world.
