Havana: Cuba is celebrating today the 58th anniversary of the victory of Playa Girón - south of the western province of Matanzas - when a people mobilized in defense of the Revolution defeated a mercenary brigade at the service of the United States, Prensa Latina reports.
That triumph achieved in less than 72 hours, was led by the historic leader Fidel Castro, and represents the first great defeat of Washington in Latin America.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, referring to the event, expressed in the social network Twitter that the 58th anniversary of the victory of Playa Girón motivates and inspires us, adding that Cuba is fighting the Giron of these times with courage and dignity.
The head of state of the largest of the Antilles also recalled the words of Fidel Castro when he said that "from April 17 (when the Girón invaders arrived) our people fought already, with weapons in hand and the price of his blood, for socialism”.
The new anniversary of the feat is celebrated in the middle of an escalation of aggressions of the current Government of the White House, which seeks to destroy the Cuban Revolution.
This Wednesday, the Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, announced the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act. Meanwhile, the National Security Advisor, John Bolton, in a speech in Florida, announced new measures of the country of the north against Cuba, which intensify the economic blockade imposed on the Island almost 60 years ago.
The day before, Díaz-Canel reiterated that faithful to the historical legacy, the Cuban Revolution keeps the firm determination to face and prevail before the aggressive escalation of the United States.
