Santiago de Chile: After a marathon day of meetings, today official and opposition parties managed to reach an agreement to give Chile a new constitution, Prensa Latina publishes.

The announcement of the so-called agreement for peace and the new constitution was made early in the building of the former National Congress, 28 days after the outbreak of a vast social movement that has resulted in the fundamental pressure for a new magna Carta in the South American country.

From the Frente Amplio to the Chile Vamos government coalition, with the exception of the Communist Party and other leftist forces - they reached a proposal that includes a citizen plebiscite by April 2020, which will be consulted on the option of a Constitutional Convention (Constituent Assembly) or a Constitutional Mixed Convention.

If the Constituent Assembly is approved, all its members will be elected for this purpose, and if the other option is successful, it will be integrated equally by elected members with that objective and parliamentarians in office.

In both cases the election of the members of both instances will be held in October 2020, coinciding with the regional and municipal elections under universal suffrage with the same electoral system that governs the elections of deputies.

The constituent body chosen by the public will have the sole purpose of drafting the new Constitution, which will govern at the time of its promulgation and publication repealing the current Magna Carta.

After drafting by the constituent body, the document will be submitted to a ratifying plebiscite through compulsory universal suffrage.
