Madrid_ The historian of the city of Havana, Eusebio Leal Spengler, was decorated by King Felipe VI with the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabel the Catholic, one of the most important that Spain grants, Radio Habana Cuba publishes.
The distinction was conferred by the monarch on the proposal of the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Alfonso Dastis, as recorded in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
"Wishing to give a proof of My Real appreciation for Mr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, Historian of the city of Havana, I come to grant him the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabel the Catholic", says the text published in the official newspaper of this European country.
According to the BOE, this decision was approved by the Council of Ministers, through a royal decree issued last Friday.
Doctor in Historical Sciences and Master in Archaeological Sciences, Leal Spengler (1942), transcends in a particular way for the conduction of the restoration works of the Historical Center of Havana, declared Patrimony of the Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1982.
Throughout his long professional career, the Cuban intellectual, politician, essayist and researcher has been awarded numerous medals and recognitions by institutions from different countries in Europe and Latin America.
Established by Ferdinand VII in 1815, the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabel the Catholic is one of the main distinctions granted in Spain.
It recognizes those extraordinary behaviors of a civil nature, carried out by Spanish and foreign persons, that will benefit the nation or contribute to the promotion of friendly relations and cooperation with the rest of the international community.
