Rome__ Pope Francis has received here today U.S. President Donald Trump, who is carrying out a few hours visit to this capital, Prensa Latina reports.

With a handshake and the exchange of cordial phrases of salutation, the Supreme Pontiff received, next to the Tronetto Hall of the papal apartment, the American president, who said that this has been for him 'a great honor to be here.'

After the expected 25-minute bilateral meeting behind closed doors, Pope Francis greeted the members of the delegation accompanying the president.

The Pope gave Trump the message for the World Day of Peace entitled 'Non-Violence, A Style of Politics for Peace', the medallion with the olive tree and three programmatic documents of his Pontificate: the apostolic exhortations The joy of the gospel and Amoris Laetitia and the papal encyclical Laudato Si.

After the interview with the Pope, Trump met with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

The American president will then be received by President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinal Palace, before meeting with Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni at the residence of the United States ambassador to the Italian state.

After concluding the visit to Rome, Trump will leave for Brussels, where he will attend a NATO meeting before returning to Italy to participate in the G-7 summit on May 26th and 27th in the Sicilian town of Taormina.
