Mayabeque, Cuba__ Athletes from Mayabeque are participating in the National Championship of Weightlifting, first category, taking place in Havana’s Cerro Pelado High Performance Athletes' Training School, from today until next Saturday.
Improving the fifth step reached in the previous edition is among the aspirations of the young province. Yesniel Núñez Alcolea, one of the coaches of the Provincial Academy of the discipline, explained that the territory is represented by a squad of seven athletes, four men and three women.
The group includes the sisters Niulis and Navey González Gala from Jaruco, Güines’ Juan Carlos Melián Zaldívar, 90 kilograms, Jonathan Ramírez Sayas in 85 and Juana Imilsis Martínez in 48.
The group is completed by Yohan Álvarez Chames in 56 and Yonny Garcés Maceo both from Quivicán in 69. They are accompanied by coaches Serguei Aillón Martínez and Alexander García. Last year with nine competitors, Mayabeque won eleven prizes, two gold, four silver and five bronze medals.
In this version, they hope to rich the first place in the 53 kilograms division with Niulis, champion and national record and its younger sister Navey in the 58. In 2016 the first one was won two gold and one silver medal, while the latter achieved three of bronze.
Among men, Álvarez Chames, who obtained three silver in the previous year, could equal or improve that performance.
