Mayabeque, Cuba: San Nicolas keeps the infant mortality rate at zero in this first quarter of 2019, after 12 births, this was corroborated by data provided by Justa Velazco, specialist of the maternal and child program in the locality.

According to the specialist this result, equals the figure achieved during the whole year 2018, and confirms that it is due to the consolidation of the transformations taking place in the primary health care, mainly in the comprehensive work of doctors, stomatologists, psychologists, social workers and nurses who ensure special care for gravid women.

Another of the essential factors that have had a satisfactory impact on the results is the improvement of the work of the maternal home in the locality where special attention is given to pregnant women and, on the other hand, the progress made by the program of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases through which future illnesses of the fetus have been diagnosed in several patients, she said.

Also the contribution of the vast majority of sectors of society to the achievement of the effective functioning of health units that preserve the safety of pregnant women and their babies, helps to maintaining the non-existence of infant deaths in the municipality, the expert added.
