Mayabeque, Cuba: Youth from Mayabeque are participating in the Third National Meeting of Specialized Workshops of Repentismo for Children's and Musical Accompaniment, in Ciego de Ávila.

The event has the objective of maintaining the presence of the punto guajiro, one of the most important traditions of Cuba, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.

The adviser of the presidency of the National Council of Houses of Culture, Fernando de Ávila, informed that this event is attended by 115 children and adolescents, belonging to the primary and secondary education levels.

This meeting is not competitive. The purpose is to exchange experiences, to show the ways of interpreting the songs and rhythms of the peasant tunes, which have their particularities in each region of the country, and to favor the mixtures of rhythms and modes of interpretation, but without losing the identity of each territory.

This third meeting has the peculiarity of adding musical accompaniment to the guajiras tunes, which is why there are about 30 laud players with a close link with the workshops held in the Houses of Culture.

As part of the activities, which must conclude next Friday, the participants held meetings with declamatory performers from the municipality of Majagua, will perform at a gala at the Principal Theater of Ciego de Avila’s capital and will attend the inauguration of the House of the Décima of this province.
