Mayabeque, Cuba: Mangrove restoration on the southern coast of Mayabeque is a priority to counteract the effects of climate change and prevent soil salinization.

The work is important for the well-being of people residing in the surrounding villages, food security and protection of different species of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles and fish, which inhabit this ecosystem.

According to the coordinator of the Manglar Vivo project, the engineer Felipe Cárdenas, the mangroves constitute a protective barrier that attenuates the recoil of the coastline and flooding by storms.

“We are carrying out many actions such as the recovery of canals and drainage ditches. We are currently working in the area from Surgidero de Batabanó to Punta Mora”, Cárdenas said.
