Mayabeque, Cuba_ With a population of 38,146 people, Mayabeque has about 60 persons that surpass a century of life, according to official data published today on the site cubahora.cu.

The Elderly Homes of the eleven municipalities of the demarcation contribute to the well-being of these individuals, as well as the Grandfather Circles that work in the Popular Councils, advised by family doctor and nurse’s offices as well as technicians and graduates in physical culture.

Grandparents' homes and geriatrics consultations are also institutions that contribute to the longevity indexes that are currently exhibited in this territory.

In Cuba 2153 citizens are over one hundred years of age, of which at least three are between 113 and 115 years old. With respect to this general figure Mayabeque contributes the 0.02 percent.

The provinces with the greatest number of elders with more than a century of life are Havana, Granma and Santiago de Cuba.

Dr. Alberto Fernández, head of the Department of Elderly, Social Assistance and Mental Health of the Ministry of Health, said that the Island is among the countries with the highest population aging rate, with more than 2.2 million people over 60 years.

He added that more than 87 percent of Cubans surpass that age and predicted that in the next decade 90 percent will do so.
