Mayabeque, Cuba_ The specialists of the Ophthalmic Surgical Unit of the Leopoldito Martínez Hospital in San José de las Lajas has carried out more than 200 surgeries since the opening of the service last December 2016 to June 1st of the current year, Radio Camoa reports.
Ms. Marilín Gómez Cairo, Head of the Ophthalmology Department in Mayabeque, said that 24 of these were cataract interventions, which began barely on May 4th, and all have been successful.
In the case of pterygium and benign eyelid tumors, there are 182 interventions that benefited more than 150 patients in the province, whose favorable recovery guarantees the professionalism of specialists working in the new Surgical Unit created only five months ago.
Dr. Carlos González Rodríguez, Head of the Ophthalmic Surgery Department of the demarcation said that today more than a hundred patients are ready to undergo cataract surgery, but there are deficits of intraocular lens of the most demanded measures.
In the second half of the year the team of this center will be strengthened with the incorporation of a doctor and a nurse, who are currently being trained at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Institute of Ophthalmology in Havana.
