Mayabeque, Cuba__ Business leaders, administrations and agencies at municipal and provinces level held a meeting where they studied the State Plan for confronting climate change, Mayabeque newspaper reported.

Approved by the Council of Ministers, the Plan is inspired by the thought of the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz, when he said: "A significant biological species is at risk of disappearing due to the rapid and progressive liquidation of its natural conditions of life : the man".

During the meeting the participants discussed the complex problems caused by climate change in the country and reviewed those in the young province, especially in Batabanó, Güines, Melena del Sur, San Nicolas, Nueva Paz and Quivicán, the most affected.

The plan contemplates several actions to stop, for example, the advance of the sea, since between 1956 and 1997 had removed to the coast almost a meter of earth, reason why Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya, minister of Science Technology and Environment (CITMA ), warned about the risk of increasing house construction and coastal populations.

If we do not act in an urgent and sustainable way, the forecast is quite serious, by the year 2050 Playa Mayabeque, in Melena del Sur and Playa Caimito in San Nicolás will disappear.

Juan Miguel García Díaz, member of the Central Committee and First Secretary of the Party in the territory, expressed the need to become aware of the situation.

The State Plan for Confronting Climate Change has five life tasks and 11 short, medium and long-range actions that are implemented throughout the country, with greater emphasis on the most affected areas and places.

Increasing emissions of greenhouse gases, droughts, indiscriminate tree cutting, rising sea levels, water pollution and global warming are some of the consequences of the problem, largely caused by man himself.
