United Nations_ The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) is holding today a meeting on consolidation and peacekeeping, the largest debate with the presence of heads of State and Government from its high-level segment, Prensa Latina reports.
This was announced by the president of that body, Miroslav Lajcak, who is now seeking to promote a new approach to address world peace.
The participation of several presidents is expected in this meeting, among them those of Colombia, Bosnia, the Central African Republic, Gambia and Ireland.
Days before the event, Lajcak pointed out that United Nations efforts should go beyond addressing the immediate needs of the territories devastated by the war.
"Much more is needed to help countries to have a lasting peace," he insisted.
According to the main adviser to the president of the General Assembly, Amena Yassine, the meeting - which begins on Tuesday and will last until tomorrow - aims to offer greater visibility to the concept of sustainable peace and the incentives to maintain it.
The construction and maintenance of peace is an area in which the General Assembly and the Security Council work together, and it also touches the entire structure of the United Nations because "it is not a task of only a few," he stressed.
This two-day meeting will serve to reflect on how conflicts arise in many regions of the world and what we can do now in the face of that challenge, he said.
It will also address the notion that preventing conflict - instead of responding to it once it erupts - can save countless lives and save billions of dollars for the international community.
The urgency of addressing the root causes of conflicts, promoting the UN's capacity to build and maintain peace, increase funds for these activities and strengthen cooperation are among the main items on the agenda.
Another important issue will be to improve the role of women and young people in peace prevention and consolidation efforts.
In addition to the heads of state, some 25 ministers and 124 delegations from different countries are expected to participate. In the same way, parallel events will be held in which there will be representatives of the private sector and civil society.
Within the framework of this meeting, the 193 members of the UN are expected to adopt a new resolution on the consolidation and maintenance of peace.
