United Nations_ The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, called today for more protection for journalists, whose work is essential for peace, justice and human rights, Prensa Latina reports.  

In his message to mark World Press Freedom Day, the highest representative of the United Nations emphasized the need to defend the right to the truth.

Guterres also called on governments to strengthen press freedom and protect journalists.

The service of these professionals is invaluable, for that reason it is necessary to apply and implement the laws that protect them and guarantee their access to information.

In addition, he stressed, crimes against journalists must be prosecuted.

'Journalists and media workers shed light on local and global challenges and tell the stories that need to be told.'

In the opinion of the UN Secretary General, press freedom is essential for peace, since it is crucial to build transparent societies and hold those in power accountable.

Was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of the General Conference of Unesco.
