Paris_ The priority of building and consolidating peace is a strong link between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Latin American and Caribbean region, according to its director general, Audrey Azoulay, Prensa Latina publishes.
The official explained that this is expressed in the various dimensions of Unesco's mandate as “cultural diplomacy for peace, dialogue around freedom of expression for peace, the issue of the prevention of violence and the way in which that we address the youth”.
According to Azoulay, 'these are issues in which these countries are very committed and in which we share common experiences'.
While Unesco has among its priorities the construction of peace in the minds of men and women, Latin America and the Caribbean was declared a Zone of Peace at a regional summit, held in Havana in January 2014.
The Director General also emphasized that Unesco is a facilitating space for the continent to share its experiences with the rest of the world, and also a platform to promote cooperation, for example, between that region and Africa.
Azoulay spoke with Prensa Latina about the Week of Latin America and the Caribbean in Unesco, which will last several days with a wide range of activities.
"It is very important because beyond the party and the good time shared, we also enjoy the diversity and cultural richness of this great region through music, dance, plastic arts, traditions, gastronomy," he said.
The French politician emphasized that “All facets of this intangible heritage, which have mixed roots, are found here in Unesco, which is the home of all cultures'.
Likewise, she classified that subcontinent as an important partner for Unesco and one of the important actors, as a regional group known as Grulac.
'The Grulac is present in all spheres', she stressed, with a particular commitment' in the sciences sector, whether in the exact sciences - mainly the question of water and ocean management -, in the social sciences, and of course, education, which is one of Unesco's flagship missions. '
Azoulay also stressed the contribution in the field of culture, in which 'it has a lot to contribute through its entire heritage', he stressed.
The eve started the Latin American and Caribbean Week in Unesco, a date that is celebrated for the third consecutive year and that this time is dedicated to the role of women in the development of those countries.
