Santiago, Chile_ The Episcopal Conference of Chile admitted the serious situation resulting from the number of victims and cases under investigation by the Prosecutor's Office due to sexual abuses committed by ministers of the Catholic Church, Prensa Latina reports.
Episcopal Conference Spokesman Jaime Coiro told reporters that the information provided by the Prosecutor's Office 'calls on us to reflect about the victims'.
We have learned that beyond the number, each of these persons has had to live through an extremely painful process, and many of them have had to tell what happened to them repeatedly at different times, Coiro pointed out.
Over the past few weeks, the National Prosecutor's Office of Chile has launched an offensive to investigate the cases of sexual abuses committed by ministers of the Catholic Church, involving 158 people and 36 cases.
The source said that there are 266 victims. Regarding the cases, 108 resulted in sentences, dismissals and acquittals.
The Chilean Prosecutor's Office confirmed that it will ask the Vatican for more details about the canonical processes of eight people who are under investigation for sexual abuses in Valparaiso, the Araucania and Santiago's Metropolitan region.
