The Hague_ The International Criminal Court (ICC) of The Hague considered the former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as a political prisoner, while denouncing the Brazilian justice system and demanding the immediate release of the former president, for suffering political persecution.
In this regard, activists for human rights in Brazil denounced that Lula was tried by a court that is under the influence of political factions adverse to the former president, Telesur points out.
The followers of the founder of the Workers' Party (PT) say that the power groups and the opposition are trying to prevent Lula's participation in the upcoming Brazilian elections scheduled for October, in which the former president is a favorite in the polls.
The latest opinion polls give a favoritism of 33 percent, more than that of its main rival, the ultra-rightist deputy Jair Bolsonaro.
Lula is serving a sentence of 12 years and one month in prison, issued in the second instance in the framework of anti-corruption investigations in the Lava Jato case for receipt of alleged bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for providing contracts.
