Madrid_ King Felipe VI on Tuesday ordered the dissolution of the General Courts (bicameral parliament) and called new general elections on June 26, after the failure in the negotiations to create a government in Spain, Prensa Latina reports.

The king signed the decree that ends the shortest legislature in Spanish democracy, due to the political parties' incapacity to agree on a government four months after the December 20 elections.

It is the first time that Spanish citizens are called to vote for the second time, due to a lack of an agreement among the parties represented in the parliament to invest the president of the government.

The speaker of the Congress of Deputies, Patxi Lopez, visited the Palace of Zarzuela to sign the decree dissolving the two houses and calling new elections. The decree will be published in the Official Bulletin of the State (BOE, in Spanish) in the next few hours.

The document signed by the king establishes that the new Courts (Congress and Senate) will be constituted on July 19.

After its publication in the BOE, the deadlines for the elections will be set to be held as stipulated by the decree, 54 days after.
