Moscow_  Russian President Vladimir Putin today praised the victory of the Soviet people over fascism and Nazi Germany, which he attributed to unity, winning spirit and love of country, the digital site of Radio Reloj publishes.

Putin congratulated the nation on the occasion of the anniversary Victory Day - May 9th 1945 - and asked for a minute's silence for the more than 26 million dead in the Great Patriotic War, and stressed afterwards that the Soviet people had brought freedom to others, and defeated the fascists.

This holiday has become a symbol of the sacred bond between Russia and its people, said the president in thanking grandparents, parents, sisters, brothers, relatives and all those who contributed to the final victory, with special veneration for veterans.

Putin said he was convinced that Russia's strength was in unity, dignity and loyalty to the homeland.
