Washington: US Vice President Mike Pence will discuss today with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard the threat of President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on products from the Latin American country due to the migratory flow on the southern border, Prensa Latina reports.
The dialogue, to be held in the White House with the presence also of the North American Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and several Mexican officials, follows two days in which the latter met with different American sectors to seek a solution to the issue.
Mexico has already warned the Republican administration of the negative impact it will cause on both sides of the border, and US analysts and lawmakers also reject the charges and call on the executive to reverse the decision.
As part of his activities in this capital, the foreign minister met yesterday with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and other US Congressmen, in what he described as a very productive meeting with a view to consolidating the economic region of North America.
After the meeting, Ebrard said that his country is already making many changes to stop migrants, and noted that 85 percent of these people come from Central America.
At the same time, Republican senators yesterday sent a sharp message to the White House to warn that they oppose the president's plans to impose tariffs and that they could hold a vote to block the measure, local media reported.
The legislators said this after Trump, in a press conference offered during his visit to the United Kingdom, reiterated his intention to go ahead with the tax rates and described as absurd that the members of the Upper House try to stop him.
