Biarritz, France: The alternative forum organized by social and political movements in rejection of the G7 summit begins today with several conferences and workshops, in the immediate vicinity of the French city of Biarritz, venue of the world powers meeting, Prensa Latina publishes.
In view of the strong security deployment present in the southwestern urban spa for the event, scheduled for August 24-26, of the leaders of Germany, Canada, United States (USA), France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, dozens of organizations chose the towns of Urrugne, Hendaye and Irun (in neighboring Spain) for the so-called counter-summit.
Pacifists, defenders of human rights and the environment and anti-neoliberalism activists, have been in the French Basque country since Monday in the preparations for the mobilization, which will have its main moment on Saturday with a great demonstration.
The first day of the counter-summit, with more than 70 conferences, workshops and cultural activities, takes place at the Gipuzkoa Fairgrounds, located in Irun, where participants will discuss decolonization, imperialism and the alternative of a multipolar world, the criminalization of migrants and the negative impact of free trade agreements.
Also on the program are threats to humanity from wars, militarism and nuclear weapons, privatizations and the danger of nationalism and walls.
The rejection of capitalism, the construction of a world of equality and respect for the sovereignty of the peoples, the demand for attention to climate change, the defense of peace and the condemnation of authoritarianism, stand out among the themes promoted by the more than 100 Organizations present a few kilometers from Biarritz, turned into a bunker.
The day before, French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner confirmed the deployment of more than 13,200 police and gendarmes, supported by military and modern technologies.
According to the official, the authorities will know how to differentiate peaceful and violent protests, alluding to the expectations that yellow vests, Basque and Catalan nationalists and the dreaded 'Black Block' reach the area.
'Overflows' will not be tolerated and the response will be immediate if they occur, Castaner warned.
