Santiago de Chile: Chilean mining and port unions today called for a general strike in support of protests against the government of Sebastián Piñera, Prensa Latina publishes.
In a statement released the day before, the workers of the largest private mining company in the country called to 'paralyze all mining in Chile along with other productive sectors'.
"We are going through the general strike until we break down the state of Emergency, take the military out of the streets, defeat the government of Piñera and achieve each of the demands of the working people, popular sectors, youth, pensioners and women!" the call refers.
'Today the country is going through difficult and critical moments; there has been a legitimate social explosion, an accumulation of rage contained in abuses, inequalities, hopelessness and uncertainty in the future (?) We are an integral part of this society (?) In the face of these serious events we cannot keep silent and we cannot remain still”,the text says.
The document clarifies that the protests are not due to higher transport prices, because that was only the trigger for this explosion because of the injustices experienced daily.
Meanwhile, the workers of the Port Stowagers Union of Valparaíso issued a statement expressing their total repudiation to the extent decreed by Piñera, and support for the massive social manifestations of the population.
They also announced that the Port Union will determine if it calls for national strike, through voting.
On Sunday night the president, offered statements trying to criminalize the protests and divert attention from the true causes of the demonstrations, while the protests generalize throughout the country, without a glimpse of a short-term solution.
