Tegucigalpa_ Lesbia Yaneth Urquía, active member of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (Copinh), was found dead this Wednesday afternoon in a place known as Mata Mulas, near the municipal dump of Marcala in La Paz, Cubadebate published.

According to the media, the victim had an open cranial brain trauma that may have been caused by a sharp object, although other versions support that she was shot to dead. Given the fact the body was sent to the General Directorate of Forensic Medicine of the Public Ministry, to have an autopsy.

According to the police authorities, Urquía left home last Tuesday after 5:00 pm on her bike, but when she did not return, the family began to look her up to find her dead in that sector of Marcala.

A report published in El Mostradorin, 2015 was considered the year with the highest number of killings of environmental activists in history.

On average three activists were killed a week for a total of 185 throughout the year, said Global Witness o Testigo Global, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing these statistics.

In the case of Honduras, the most significant case was Bertha Cáceres in March and, weeks later, Nelson Garcia, who was also an activist of Copinh.
