Buenos Aires_ Controversy grows in Argentina following President Mauricio Macri’s decree for a Public Safety Emergency, as well as other recent dispositions, due to the military implications and the risks they entail, Prensa Latina reports.

This declaration overrides the Homeland Security Act, giving more power to the military, authority to the Ai Force to take down aircrafts and makes flexible the controls over the purchases in this area, media outlets report.

The official argument is the "collective danger situation" that could exist in the country and aims at fighting drug trafficking, among other crimes, including the "illegal terrorist association", the Pagina 12 journal reported today.

Former Secretary of National Security Sergio Berni warned about the decree that validates the attack to suspicious airplanes crossing the Argentinean air space. "It is a death sentence without a trial", he said.

Even Deputy Margarita Stolbitzer, who contributed to Macri’s electoral victory, said that approving by decree the shooting-down of airplanes is a huge institutional mistake that may have irreversible consequences and does not solve the problem of drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, the current Secretary of National Security Eugenio Burzaco, minimized the lack of legislative debate and the interference of the armed forces in issues of national security, as he justified the permission to shoot down the plane adding that a protocol of action already existed.

Peace Nobel Prize Adolfo Pérez Esquivel described the decree as illegal as along as it is not discussed in Congress and national laws are modified.
