Bangui_ Some 2.5 million people are facing starvation in the Central African Republic, affected by insecurity that restricts access and availability of food, Prensa Latina reports.

According to the World Food Programme (WFP by its Spanish initials), half of the population of this landlocked country (with 4,804,316 inhabitants) is a victim of this scourge. That number doubled compared to the figure registered a year ago.

WFP revealed in its report that the harvest of the 2014-1015 season was very poor and the United Nations requires $ 41 million to meet the most urgent needs.

According to the study, one out of six women, men and children, suffers strong or extreme food insecurity, while one in three lives with moderate food uncertainty and doubt about when they will eat again.

"The three years of crisis have taken a huge toll on the people of the C.A.R. Families have been forced so often to sell what they own, pull their kids out of school, even resort to begging. People are left with nothing," said Guy Adwa, deputy director of the WFP in C.A.R.
