Washington_ The reduction of poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean goes slow and it also is lagging behind in the access of vulnerable groups such as children to basic services, said a report from the World Bank (WB).
According to Granma newspaper, the report notes that between 2000 and 2014, extreme poverty fell from 25.5 percent to 10.8 percent, but since 2012 the pace of that reduction is much lower due to the economic slowdown.
In addition, the inequality declined marginally and is still high. Latin America is one of the most unequal regions in the world.
"Poverty was reduced by one percentage point in the last two years and this is the third part of the reduction experienced in the most positive calendars of the beginning of the century," Oscar Calvo, manager of the practice of the Poverty and Equity of the WB .
According to the report, the region advanced between 2000 and 2014 in school enrollment and electricity services by making them almost universal, nevertheless, is still lagging behind in access to basic services such as sanitation and running water.
Internet access, like drinking water and sanitation in housing, are the lowest and most unequally distributed in Latin America, with significant variations between and within countries.
