France_ A total of 5,596 migrants have been evacuated from the Calais camp since the start, on Monday, of the dismantling operation, French ministry sources said today.
In a statement, the Minister of the Interior, Bernard Cazeneuve, and the Minister of Housing, Emmanuelle Cosse, said that today 1,215 migrants had been transferred to shelters located throughout the country, while 133 minors were taken to special facilities.
According to ministers, the work on dismantling the makeshift shelters in the Calais camp will continue in the upcoming days. This camp, until last weekend, was home to more than 6,000 migrants and asylum seekers.
The ministers praised the work of firefighters, who struggled to extinguish several fires reported in the camp in the last few hours.
The prefecture of Pas de Calais announced that the camp had been completely evacuated; however, several hundreds of undocumented migrants left the site without completing the registration process. Apparently they are refusing to be moved to other cities.
French authorities plan to maintain security forces on the site in order to prevent migrants from returning to the camp.
