Bogota_ Colombian President, Juan Manuel Santos, will analyze today the contribution of the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), to the verification of the future bilateral ceasefire he will negotiate with the FARC-EP, Prensa Latina reports.
Members of that bloc will be part, as observers, of a political mission coordinated and financed by the United Nations (UN), as an international component of a tripartite verification mechanism, equally composed of government representatives, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP).
The president will travel to Ecuador today afternoon, to participate in the Fourth Summit of CELAC, time when he will express gratitude for the support of that community to the efforts in search of peace, Santos said in his speech yesterday.
The contribution of the countries that are members of such organization in this special mission will be formalized during the meeting in Quito, the head of State said at the Presidential Palace (seat of government), after thanking the UN for its support aimed at bringing about detente.
The verification and monitoring apparatus will also supervise putting down the weapons or disarmament of the guerrillas once that stage has been established.
Since July 20, the FARC-EP decreed a fighting pause while the president said he would only agree to silence all the rifles if there are ideal conditions for its compliance and verification.
The recent progresses increase expectation around the proximity of the suspension of hostilities between the security forces and the rebel group, the main one involved in the long-running internal conflict.
At the request of the government and the FARC-EP, the UN Security Council approved the constitution of such political mission, observation team also responsible for settling differences and could be mainly concentrated in about eight zones, still to be determined, Santos said.
