Madrid_ The former leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers'' Party (PSOE), Pedro Sanchez, resigned on Saturday to his seat in Congress to protest against the group's decision to facilitate a new conservative government led by Mariano Rajoy, Radio Havana Cuba published.

Sanchez explained that his decision resulted from his 'deep disagreement' with the resolution approved by the interim leadership that replaced him to support a second term of the right-wing Popular Party (PP).

The former socialist leader said that he was resigning to his seat as a lawmaker so as not to be forced to violate the polemic turn of the centennial organization, which will abstain from voting on Saturday in the investiture of Rajoy as the president of the government.

'I will not go against my party, nor will I go against my electoral commitment,' stressed the former leader of Spain's main opposition force who defended until the last minute his strong refusal to allow the continuity of the right wing in power.

'The reasons for my resignation are well known. Basically, I deeply disagree with facilitating the Mariano Rajoy Government,' Sanchez told a news conference at the venue of the Congress of Deputies.
