Roma__ Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi resigned after being defeated in the referendum to change the of the Constitution and would submit his resignation to Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella on Monday, Radio Havana Cuba publishes.
"The no win clearly and neatly," Renzi said in a choked voice at a news conference in which he said: "I assume the responsibility for the defeat. My experience in government ends here".
Italians rejected this Sunday the reform of the Constitution promoted by the own Renzi and by the ending of the polls the "no" obtained near 60 percent of the votes counted, whereas the "yes" reached around the 39 percent.
A high percentage of the 50 million Italians, almost 70 percent of those called to the polls, spoke about the constitutional reform promoted by Renzi, who linked his political career to a yes victory.
Renzi proposed the end of the current parliamentary system, the so-called "perfect bicameralism", which gives the same power to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, and to reduce the number of senators from 300 to about 100.
