Quito__ The counting of votes continues today in Ecuador to determine if Lenin Moreno will reach the required score to win the presidential elections or if a second round of votes will be necessary.
As reported by the Cuban News Agency with just under eight percent of the Receiving Boards, Moreno, from the governmental Movement PAIS Alliance, is leading the way with 39.08 percent of the ballots, while its closest rival , the former banker Guillermo Lasso occupies the second position with 28,43.
Although from the beginning of the count Moreno is ahead of Lasso and keeps a difference of more than 10 percentage points, he does not reach the minimum of the 40 percent, required to win the elections.
After the comitial day, carried out last Sunday, the next phase of accounting began with agility, but when exceeding 80 percent, the flow began to be slower.
According to the president of the National Electoral Council, Juan Pablo Pozo, the situation responds to the inconsistencies found in the minutes, verified as it is established in the process.
He then pointed out that these drawbacks are normal in such cases and he called on the population to trust the authorities and to wait for the final result with confidence.
International observers from the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (Uniore) and Ecuadorian social movements also called for peace and calm, given the provocations of some groups, calling for a campaign for the second round and incite to take to the streets in protest.
