United Nations_ UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights on hazardous and waste substances, Baskut Tuncak, warned today that the conflict in Ukraine could provoke a chemical disaster, Prensa Latina reports.

The combats in eastern Ukraine could trigger a catastrophe due to the large number of chemical and industrial facilities located in the affected area, he said in a statement.

According to the expert, the parties in conflict, the government and the rebels of Donetsk and Lugansk, waged battles in cities, near industrial centers, with factories increasingly exposed to missiles.

"The consequences for those living in the vicinity could be severe," he insisted.

The Special Rapporteur reiterated the UN's concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014 following the coup d'état supported by Western countries.

"All parties should be aware of the danger of existing chemical disaster, but above all, they should stop the fighting," he added.
