Quito__ Lenin Moreno leads the presidential elections in Ecuador with 51.15 percent against 48.85 of his opponent, the banker Guillermo Lasso, with 97.91 percent of the votes counted by the National Electoral Council (CNE) which makes him the new Head of State of that nation.
According to Granma newspaper, the Alianza PaÃs candidate was vice president of the Republic during Correa’s first term of government and from 2014 to 2016 he served as special envoy of the UN Secretary on Disability and Accessibility.
"We must defend the Revolution and build a better country," Moreno said. Before his followers gathered in Quito he highlighted the difficult moments after the international economic crisis and the strong earthquake that affected the provinces of Esmeralda and ManabÃ.
The triumph of Alianza PaÃs marks the continuity of the progressive movements in Latin America, just as the regional right escalates its attacks against sovereign processes such as the one that crosses Venezuela.
