Mexico_ Brazil's former president, Dilma Rousseff, warned today that the return of neoliberalism in Latin America would be very serious for democracy and the fight against corruption, Prensa Latina reports.
During a press conference in this capital, Rousseff reiterated that she was the victim of a coup d'état. Brazil always won when it was democratic and it only lost when it was not, she stressed.
Along with Inácio Lula da Silva, Dilma directed 13 years of government of the Labor Party, that defended the policies of social welfare.
On the economic level, the former president said that such policies made her country to have one of the highest monetary reserves in history, the lowest unemployment rate and results in the fight against hunger and extreme poverty.
She rejected the label of populists with whom some wants to stigmatize progressive and leftist governments in Latin America.
"What I saw were governments that took prudent steps to get out of the neoliberal cycle, which was the period of the lost decades. I saw governments dedicated to eliminating exclusion and inequality with prudent policies. I did not see populist governments. I saw popular governments, "she emphasized.
She warned that the coup remains in force in Brazil and may even jeopardize the 2018 elections in which, she predicted, former President Lula could return to the presidency.
Rousseff is in Mexico City invited by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), to give a lecture on 'The Future of Democracy in Latin America', as part of the Latin American Colloquium: Politics, Future, and Equality.
