Germany_ The German parliament approved this Friday to legalize same sex marriage with 393 votes in favor and 226 against, including Angela Merkel, Radio Habana Cuba publishes.

The German chancellor justified her vote against arguing that for her, marriage is the union of a man and a woman, although she admits that other unions have the same rights and can even proceed to adoption.

The session was described as historic, although detractors of the bill criticized that it is an opportunistic measure. The initiative is approved only three months before the general election.

The approval of the gay marriage had always been categorically rejected by the Christian-Democrat Union that runs Merkel and has ruled Germany for the past 12 years. Therefore, the political impact of this measure is very considerable.

However, the decision is still a parliamentary reflection of a social reality. Earlier this year, a poll released by the Federal Office for Anti-Discrimination revealed that 82.6 percent of Germans are in favor of allowing same-sex marriage.
