Roma_ The FAO Conference, the highest entity of this body of the United Nations agency, begins today its 40th session, focused on the global challenges of food and agriculture, Prensa Latina reports.

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni will give the opening speech of the meeting during the opening session in which will speak the general director of the organization, José Graziano Da Silva, and the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolín.

600 high-level government representatives, including more than 60 ministers are also participating in the five days meeting,.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations said in a statement that the agenda of the meeting includes policies related to global food security, climate change in agriculture and the efforts to advance the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

The 194 members of the Conference will also approve the organization's work program and budget for the period 2018-2019.

Ongoing action to prevent famine in nations affected by drought and conflicts in Africa, as well as water scarcity in the Near East and North Africa, will be parallel events.

Zero Hunger, moving from commitment to action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 2, is the theme of one of the conferences, in which FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Global Food (PMA) are working.

Within the context of annexed events, there will be a conference on the role of FAO in supporting the implementation of the Peace Agreement in Colombia, progress and challenges.

There will also be a reflection on food security in small island states and the role of rural development to mitigate the pressures of migration at the global level.
