The US National Hurricane Center (CNH) reported that storm Irma strengthened Thursday in the eastern Atlantic to become the fourth hurricane of the 2017 season, according to Prensa Latina.
US forecasters predict Irma will intensify further by Thursday night and said it could continue strengthening until it becomes an extremely dangerous hurricane over the next few days.
Irma is located about 2,975 kilometers east of the Sotavento Islands and has sustained maximum winds of 155 kilometers per hour and moves west-northwest with maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour and higher bursts.
Hurricane force winds extend up to 30 kilometers from the center outward, while tropical storm winds extend up to 130 kilometers. By the strength of its winds it is considered a category 2 hurricane.
In Managua, Nicaragua, the authorities are monitoring the phenomenon that according to meteorologists could impact the Caribbean coast of Central America and Colombia.
This hurricane is emerging as a cyclone as dangerous and devastating as the 'Harvey' (which wreaked havoc in Houston, Texas, last week), "said Nicaraguan expert Agustín Moreira.
