Washington_ Florida Governor Rick Scott urged residents of that territory to protect themselves from Hurricane Irma, with four out of five on the Saffir-Simpson scale, Radio Havana Cuba reports.
According to meteorological information, the natural phenomenon will hit that territory mainly by its center, from south to north from Sunday.
At a press conference, Scott said much of that area will be impacted by a major hurricane, which will leave huge damages from coast to coast on the peninsula.
According to the governor, Irma, the fourth event of its kind in the current Atlantic hurricane season, represents a mortal threat because of the large size and intensity of the winds.
On the other hand, Scott recalled the devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew 25 years ago in South Florida, where thousands of homes were destroyed and 65 people died directly and indirectly.
He also insisted on the need for people to leave the vulnerable areas and recalled that today is the last day to leave the places indicated in the evacuation orders.
He said experts would conduct further inspections of the Okeechobee Lake embankment, where they are attempting to reduce the water level to avoid potential overflow with rainfall.
The day before, Scott issued mandatory evacuation orders for seven towns south of the lake.
For his part, US President Donald Trump reiterated the call for residents of likely locations to be safe and to leave the track of the meteor if possible.
