San Juan_ The governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, declared today the state of emergency in the country due to the proximity of Hurricane Maria that has already reached category 3 in the scale Saffir-Simpson, Radio Havana Cuba publishes.

According to local media, the Puerto Rican authority warned of possible negative effects of the meteor, saying it would be "more devastating than Irma," another hurricane that sowed huge destruction in the Caribbean and the United States a few days ago.

According to Rossello's estimates, Maria will reach the territory of Puerto Rico this Wednesday and will have an intensity of 3 or 4.

Hours earlier, the US National Hurricane Center.had raised Santa Maria's status to a Category 1 hurricane but warned that it could intensify during the week as the hurricane moves toward Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

At the moment, the cyclone is located about 225 kilometers from Barbados in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea, with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour.

The hurricane alert remains in effect for several of the islands hit by Hurricane Irma, including Dominica and St. Kitts and Nevis.
