San Juan_ The first reports on the impact of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico indicate that the island suffered serious damage: floods are reported in different parts of the country, entire communities are practically destroyed and damage of all kinds in public and private buildings, according to Granma newspaper .

Also, the entire island -3.5 million people - is without electricity and there are more than 10 000 people in government-run shelters.

Meanwhile, Governor Ricardo Roselló Nevares asked the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to declare the entire island area of disaster.

Rosselló said that this hurricane is "the worst atmospheric event" that the island has suffered in more than a century.

Maria struck the Puerto Rican territory since Wednesday morning, with sustained winds of 250 kilometers per hour, extreme floods and severe damage to infrastructure, a week after Hurricane Irma also struck the island.

Dozens of municipalities received a disaster certification because of Irma, with impacts close to $ 1 billion.

For his part, the director of the State Agency for Emergency Management, Abner Gomez, warned citizens not to go out until next Friday in the face of the risk of falling power and the situation with trees and debris.

"Definitely Puerto Rico, when we can go out, we will find a destroyed island," Gomez told in a press conference.

So far there are no reports of deaths and we hope not to have them, he said.
