United Nations_ The United Nations Security Council is discussing today the situation in Haiti and the work carried out by the Stabilization Mission (MINUSTAH), in that country, where the process to elect the president and parliamentarians remains incomplete, Prensa Latina reported.

The 15-member body uses as the basis of their discussions the latest report of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, on the Haitian scene, document covering the events between August 25th, 2015, date of its previous report, and the last March 1st.

According to the Secretary General, the situation in the period was characterized by political uncertainty arising from the difficulties with the elections to choose the president, 20 senators, 119 deputies, 140 municipal authorities and 570 at Community level.

In this regard, he notes that the third and final round of voting, scheduled for December 27th, was postponed and there is not yet a definition about a new date as a result of allegations of fraud and tensions, with some protests and violent incidents.

Ban evaluated as complex the humanitarian situation, from the cholera epidemic in force, with 36 000 suspected cases and 322 deaths last year, the impact of drought and the effects of the devastating earthquake of January 2010, that still keeps nearly 60,000 Haitians displaced.

According to the diplomat, the Minustah continues its assistance on security and institutional strengthening.

The Security Council extended last year until October 15, 2016 the mandate of the force of blue helmets activated in 2004, although in UN had begun its participation since 1990 in the Caribbean country.

Ban mention in his report some progress Haiti's stability, but warns of the importance of addressing the many prevailing challenges, including the conclusion of the electoral process.
