Brussels_ To 34 dead and 200 wounded rose the number of victims after the terrorist attacks today in the Belgian capital attributed to the Islamic State group (EI), Yvan Mayeur, mayor of Brussels said, Prensa Latina reported.
Mayeur indicated that the total of dead increased to 20 and 106 the injured after the explosion of a bomb in the Maelbeek metro station located near the headquarters of the European Union (EU), while another 14 died and 94 were injured in the Zaventem International airport.
"Brussels was again hit by hatred and fanaticism, which demonstrates the need for a huge work to rebuild this capital as an open and cosmopolitan city," said the mayor.
The Belgian authorities raised the terror alert to the maximum level and the security measures against terrorist actions to find those responsible and prevent further attacks, while prioritizing assistance to victims.
Charles Michel, Belgian Prime Minister, urged people to remain calm and to increase solidarity because, he said, "what we feared happened."
Increasing the surveillance in the most vulnerable facilities and public places, the closure of Zaventem airport, paralyzing public transport and strengthening the army at the border controls are among the main actions commanded by the government.
The capital's schools closed and a security perimeter around the premises of the EU were established, from the Cinquantenaire Park to Arts-Loi metro station, next to Maelbeek’s.
Employees of the institutions of the bloc were asked to stay at their offices, because it will be impossible to return to them due to the restrictions of movement in that area.
These EI attacks took place in Brussels some days after the capture in this capital last Friday of Salah Abdeslam, one of the authors of the attacks in Paris on November 2015, where 130 people died.
