Havana_ The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, concludes today his visit to Cuba, framed during the thirty-seventh session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in this capital, Prensa Latina reports.  

Guterres will speak on the opening day of the forum that will be held here until Friday at the Convention Center to discuss issues such as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, South-South cooperation and the fight against inequality in the region.

The 69-year-old Portuguese diplomat arrived on the island this Monday on an official visit and was received by the newly elected president Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Both leaders discussed issues of peace, international security, climate change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as the role of the Island in multilateral institutions.

The Secretary General of the United Nations also paid tribute to the Cuban national hero, José Martí, in the Memorial that bears the name of the independence leader, whose legacy and values ​​he highlighted.

José Martí was a hero for all the progressive movements of the world, so this tribute has a very special meaning for me, he said.

In addition, the visitor toured areas of the Historic Center, declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, a visit that gave him the opportunity to recognize the work of conservation and restoration, remembering the difficulties the largest of the Antilles is facing and the persistence of the US blockade.

Guterres was accompanied on his tour by the historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal, and the executive secretary of ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena.
