Cuba presented today the progress made in the field of human rights before the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, an occasion in which dozens of countries expressed support and admiration for the achievements, Prensa Latina publishes. Â
For the third time (after 2009 and 2013) the nation showed the intense work done to guarantee the promotion and protection of human rights, emphasizing the progress made in the last five years.
During the exercise, the chancellor maintained that the country's will is to perfect its development model to 'build a sovereign, independent, socialist, democratic, prosperous and sustainable nation, by strengthening the institutionality of our political system, genuinely participatory, with full popular support. '
The presentation of Cuba generated high expectations at the UN headquarters in Geneva, where representatives from 143 countries took the floor to make more than 300 recommendations, a record number of interventions in the history of UPR.
In the statements, expressions of recognition and admiration for the progress made by the Caribbean nation in issues such as children's rights, gender equality, free access to health and education stood out.
The Cuban minister thanked all the recommendations made on the basis of respect for principles of sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs, and rejected attempts at manipulation.
He described as "regrettable that some countries continue to manipulate the issue of human rights for political purposes, to continue justifying the blockade," implicitly referring to the United States.
In the conclusions of the exercise, RodrÃguez reiterated Cuba's commitment to cooperate with the UN human rights system and in particular with the Council and its mechanisms of universal and non-discriminatory application.
