Cuba Celebrates Week of Action against the Mosquito in the Americas

Havana_ With the aim of becoming aware of the importance of eliminating the breeding sites for insects that transmit arboviruses, the Week of Action against the Mosquito in the Americas will be held from today and until October 7, the National Agency of News reports.

The date, promoted by the Pan American Health Organization, coincides with the intensive stage against the vector, if we take into account that the rainy season and the high temperatures favor the appearance of the Aedes genus mosquito, transmitting agent of Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, Yellow Fever and Malaria, according to experts from the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (Minsap).

During the presentation of the Week of Action against Mosquitoes in the Americas, Cristian Morales Fuhrimann, representative in Cuba of the Pan-American and World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO), highlighted in this capital the work of the largest of the Antilles in the control and prevention of diseases transmitted by these insects.

The representative of that international organization of the United Nations, explained that this has been possible by the community and inter-sectorial participation and above all by the political will of the country, which is expected to be fulfilled in the rest of the region.

Dr. Francisco Durán, National Director of Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), explained about the current epidemiological situation in Cuba, a tropical country that has favorable conditions for the proliferation of mosquitoes.

He clarified that despite carrying out specific activities by Minsap with the support of the vector control team, the solution to the problem is not achieved, and there has been propagation in certain areas and territories, and reiterated the importance of reinforcing the measures of prevention from homes.

Achieving a job of promotion, education and taking the messages to the population about what they have to do is the purpose of the Week of Action against Mosquitoes in the Americas, he said.

The central activity for the anniversary will take place in the western province of Matanzas, for its sustained work in the control and prevention of arbovirosis, under the motto: Activate yourself against the mosquito.
