Havana: Cubans are celebrating Africa Day this Saturday with joy, gratitude and respect, a continent that contributed to culture and the formation of national identity, Prensa Latina reports.

On this occasion, Cuban vice minister of Foreign Affairs Anayansi Rodriguez stressed that Cuba and Africa are joined by strong ties of history, struggles and shared desires.

“No other people in the world contributed as much to forging the Cuban nation as the African one, because we inherited from it the spirit of resistance and the love for freedom”, Rodriguez said.

In a ceremony held on Friday on the 56th anniversary of the creation of the African Union (AU), once the Organization of African Unity, the official stressed that Africa permanently supports us on many sensitive issues in the international arena.

"Decisive is the support to the battle against the economic blockade imposed by the United States, which becomes more important at the present time when that government intensified the policy with actions of intimidation towards the Caribbean nation," she argued.

The Vice minister also welcomed the fact that the UA is consolidating itself as a key player worldwide with its own voice and is a point of reference in the defense of the objectives and conditions of the underdeveloped countries.

She reiterated the firm commitment to the cause of the African peoples and the willingness to support them in their struggles, dreams and hopes.

For his part, the ambassador of Egypt in Cuba, Mohamed Hisham, recalled that the largest of the Antilles played an essential role in the anticolonial wars.

"We can’t forget that the Cuban blood was spilled on our lands and contributed to the liberation of different States, including Namibia and Angola," he said.

The Egyptian representative, whose country holds the pro tempore presidency of the AU, stressed that the island presence is maintained in the African continent through medical and educational collaboration.

Precisely, at present, more than 4450 Cuban collaborators work in 28 nations of sub-Saharan Africa, according to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba. (IVP)
