Havana, Cuba: The Workshop of the SAS-Cuba Country Program of cooperation with the European Union (EU) begins its sessions today aimed at helping increase the production of quality food, in order to respond to local demand, Prensa Latina publishes.

This project, called 'Strategic Support for Sustainable Food Security in Cuba' (SAS-Cuba), is carried out between the Ministry of Agriculture of Cuba (MINAG) and the EU Delegation, in coordination with the portfolios of the Food Industry, Internal Trade and Higher Education.

It also runs in coordination with the ministries of Science, Technology and Environment, Public Health, Economy and Planning and Foreign Trade and Investment.

The plan, which is accompanied by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will begin to be implemented after the ratification of the Financing Agreement signed in September between the Cuban government and the EU.

The project seeks to sustainably increase the production of quality food to meet local demand, specifically through the application of innovative, environmental and climate-resilient approaches, and its implementation period is 2019-2025

Among the expected results are to support management capacity to strengthen decision processes and policy formulation, and develop sustainable and resilient systems, ensuring the supply of safe, healthy and diversified local food.

Also improve the articulation of the actors in the selected municipalities in an Integrated Knowledge Management System (SIGC), based on sustainable and resilient food production.

The workshop includes the exhibition of the Municipal Food Self-Supply Program (PAM) and its relevance in the current context of Cuban agriculture.
